The surfaces you want painted
Begin with a room list, then identify the walls, ceilings, doors and trim you want included in each space. A room with a tall ceiling, many doors or detailed trim presents a different scope from a room with simple walls. Floor area can help describe the property, but it does not tell the whole story of the surfaces to be painted.
Existing condition and preparation
Mention visible cracks, peeling areas, stains and previous repairs when requesting a quote. Ask which preparation items are included and which need a separate assessment. Do not assume that repainting includes every repair or resolves the cause of existing damage. Clear photos and a walkthrough can help identify questions before the scope is agreed.
Color, product and finish choices
Tell the painter about significant color changes and ask how priming and coverage will be addressed. Request the proposed product and sheen in writing. Sheen describes how much light a painted surface reflects; the right choice also depends on the appearance and maintenance you want. The paint manufacturer’s guidance can help you discuss the options.
Furniture, access and daily routines
An empty room and a furnished room have different access needs. Explain which rooms must remain available and who will move furniture or remove wall decorations. Mention stairwells, high walls, work from home schedules and other constraints early. These details help the painter assess the work rather than fill in gaps later.
A practical estimate request
- List each room and the surfaces to include.
- Describe current conditions and intended color changes.
- Share your ZIP code, photos and preferred timing.
- Ask for included work, exclusions and optional items to be separated.
Can I get an exact price from room count alone?
Room count is a starting detail, not a complete scope. F & G offers free quotes. Share the surfaces and conditions of your project so you can discuss a price for the work you actually want.
For more on finish selection, see the manufacturer’s guide below. This is general product education and does not identify the paint products included in an F & G estimate.
